BLEND(2020)

Blend a multiplayer online experience in which a rotating canvas generates beautiful shapes. Participants can choose a colour palette and immediately see their drawings spin into smooth gradients and smudged swirls.

Simultaneous visitors to the Blend website are paired up to play together. Two connected participants’ drawings intertwine with each other on the same canvas - an opportunity for an unusual and fun interaction with a stranger

Blend was presented as part of Watermans Digital Weekender 2020

Blend is part of Bimble Space and can be found here.

While there are no predefined goals or rules, people immediately began to invent their own, finding ways to communicate with their partner by mimicking their movements, drawing symbols like hearts or circling around each other.

The knowledge that another person is seeing your movements and you may be touching the same spots on your phone screens leads to a feeling of connection despite the physical distance.

Technical Information

The animations in Blend are created in p5.js, a library for JavaScript. The communication between participants uses Node.js and socket.io. The site is run on Heroku.

Blend received around 15k unique visitors over the course of 2 days.
