THE TIGER

I think about this poem a lot, because it’s really good.

It was written by a six year old, which is impressive but, actually, I think being six probably gave Nael an advantage over an adult. I’m not a poet but I know, in art in general, it is stupidly difficult to keep things simple. 

It takes bravery to make something this basic. 

I think a lot of poets would have tried to describe the yes-ness of the tiger’s escape with a variety of adjectives and imagery, or maybe a metaphor. That’s what you’re meant to do, right?

As adults we get trained that you can’t just look inside yourself and spit out what’s there.

But this kid just came in with:

Yes
YES

and it says absolutely everything.
